Eleuthera,Bahamas

Idyllic and relatively little-known paradise

Looking for that perfect honeymoon spot, friends of ours recommended Eleuthera. Where the heck is that? Well Eleuthera is located in the Bahamas about 50 miles east of Nassau. It is not very well known but home to some of the most beautiful seculuded beaches. We started looking into it and thought it would be the perfect place for us to disconnect from the rest of the world for a week. We left for the Bahamas on Sunday.

We checked into the Jolly Mon house and got settled. WOW, What an amazing property this was. The photos did no justice. We found Jolly Mon via VRBO. We settled in and discovered that not much is open on a Sunday in Eleuthera, we decided to eat dinner at 1648. The food and the atmosphere were amazing!

Short Recap Video

Monday took us on an adventure to the southern town of Rock Sound in search of the Market. After grocery shopping, the store clerk recommended we eat lunch at the Wild Orchid; yet another wonderful atmosphere for lunch. We made dinner at the house: tacos!

On Tuesday we ventured the north side of the island after spending the morning at 10 Bay Beach. The first stop was the Glass Window Bridge. You can see the Atlantic Ocean on the left and the Caribbean Sea on the right. We also stopped in at the Island Made Gift Shop in Gregory Town.

Wednesday took us back to the south side of Eleuthera. We drove back through Rock Sound to Ocean Hole. The top layer is fresh water and there is salt water on the bottom. From there, we went to Light House Beach. The road was 4 miles of rough, unpaved road; totally worth the drive. Any less of a driver and our Nissan Note would not have made it down the road/trail in one piece. We explored the lighthouse and at our picnic lunch on the beach. On the way home we stopped outside a gift shop to see their cool wall of license plates. Across the street there was a lovely Episcopal Church right next to the ocean.

We spent Thursday exploring the beaches on both the Atlantic and Caribbean sides of the island. We went to a few more souvenir shops and ran some errands before our flight in the morning (fill the water jug, gas up the rental car).

We had an amazing trip and looking forward to going back again soon. The people of Eleuthera were very friendly and welcoming. The entire week there we were probably 2 of 50 tourists on the island, we really had the place to our self !
